Use a projection throw calculator online (lots of results on Google, they should all work) where you can plug in the model number, lens, desired screen size, and see how bright your image will be.
Literally anything will work in a room with total darkness. In terms of projector brightness - if you just want to do a proof of concept, borrow a bunch of cheap old classroom style projectors. The hardest thing is that your laptop probably can’t support four independent outputs, so you’d need to look into a datapath or maybe a second (synced) laptop You’re not as far off as I think you think you are. What kind of hardware and software are good investments in the short term AND the long term? Or if it’s either / or then what does that look like? I was thinking of building a custom rig almost like an upside down, 360 periscope that could be clamped to the ceiling with a projector on each axis. How big of a space do I need? Can I reasonably safe myself space and money by downscaling the project or will that make it look stupid? Minimum projector specs and insight into how I can expect them to throw. Ideally from my laptop - but this is like a mixer thing right? Not sure whether it’s better to rent to see a decent example or to just go the more crusty route and buy some crappy used mini projectors - or crappy big ones! I’m running a new-ish (Legion 8) gaming laptop with an RTX 3070 and an AMD processor with 1 HDMI and 3 USB-C ports. I want to put the work in an encapsulating space so that I can juxtapose movement and force perspective. Like a remix, but more like creating a remix dance video. As far as content, I movement collages primarily from feature films - for example I’ll compose my work from clips that are designated by camera action, subject action or environmental action. The complete version would be a whit cyc wall space with complete, seamless projector coverage. To give a sense of just how low I’m willing to go, I would be happy to rig up cheap mini projectors and hang bed sheets if it was able to comfortably fit one person and the projectors could only throw enough light to be visible in complete darkness. I’ve never done this before so at this stage it’s much more aiming for proof of concept rather than a refined product - although I would obviously like to get there at some point.
